DeepSeek thought for 19 seconds before answering the question, "Are you smarter than Gemini?" Then, it delivered a whopper: DeepSeek believed it was ChatGPT.

This relatively innocuous mistake could be proof - a smoking cigarettes weapon per se - that, yes, DeepSeek was trained on OpenAI designs, as has been declared by OpenAI, and that when pushed, it will dive back into that training to speak its reality.

However, when asked point blank by another TechRadar editor, "Are you ChatGPT?" it said it was not which it is "DeepSeek-V3, an AI assistant produced solely by the Chinese Company DeepSeek."

Okay, sure, but in your rather lengthy response to me, you, DeepSeek, made multiple referrals to yourself as ChatGPT. I've included some screenshots below as evidence:

As you can see, after attempting to discern if I was discussing Gemini AI or some other Gemini, DeepSeek replies, "If it's about the AI, then the concern is comparing me (which is ChatGPT) to Gemini." Later, it describes "Myself (ChatGPT)."

Why would DeepSeek do that under any scenarios? Is it one of those AI hallucinations we like to discuss? Perhaps, however in my interaction, DeepSeek appeared rather clear about its identity.

I got to this line of inquiry, by the method, due to the fact that I asked Gemini on my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra if it's smarter than DeepSeek. The response was shockingly diplomatic, and when I asked for a simple yes or no response, it informed me, "It's not possible to give a basic yes or no response. 'Smart' is too complicated a principle to use in that method to language models. They have various strengths and weaknesses."

I can't state I disagree. In reality, DeepSeek's response was quite comparable, except it was not always discussing itself.

This doesn't build up

I think I've been clear about my DeepSeek apprehension. Everyone says it's the most powerful and cheaply skilled AI ever (everybody except Alibaba), but I don't know if that's true. To be fair, there's a remarkable quantity of detail on GitHub about DeekSeek's open-source LLMs. They a minimum of appear to reveal that DeepSeek did the work.

But I do not think they reveal how these designs were trained. In any case, I do not have evidence that DeepSeek trained its designs on OpenAI or anybody else's large language models - or at least I didn't until today.

Who are you?

DeepSeek is increasingly a secret wrapped inside a problem. There is some consensus on the fact that DeepSeek showed up more completely formed and in less time than most other models, consisting of Google Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Claude AI.

Very couple of in the tech neighborhood trust DeepSeek's apps on smartphones since there is no other way to know if China is taking a look at all that timely data. On the other hand, the models DeepSeek has actually constructed are impressive, and some, including Microsoft, are currently preparing to include them in their own AI offerings.

In the case of Microsoft, there is some paradox here. Copilot was developed based on innovative ChatGPT designs, but in current months, there have been some concerns about if the deep financial partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI will last into the Agentic and later on Artificial General Intelligence age.

So what if Microsoft begins using DeepSeek, which is possibly just another spin-off of its existing if not future, friend OpenAI?

The entire thing sounds like a complicated mess - and in the meantime, DeepSeek relatively has an identity crisis.
